Taunton Handyman Services is built on the experience of two fifty-somethings with a unique blend of practical and admin skills.
Gordon does the hands-on work with the hammers, nails, paint and tiles. He believes that good preparation is key to a good, lasting job – not the “bish bash bosh” approach followed by some contractors.
“He says:
“I’ve had quite a varied and sometimes strange career path leading to Taunton Handyman Services. I served my Carpentry and joinery apprenticeship with a firm who were both builders and undertakers – so I’ve made everything from windows to coffins!
I was then in Prison for 24 years – before you think I’m a jailbird, I was an Instructor of Carpentry and Joinery in the Prison Service for 24 years. It was satisfying to help men to have a trade, so that when they were released, they were less likely to go back into crime. I could tell you some funny tales about those years, but the Official Secrets Act prevents me!
After that, I was an NVQ assessor in Carpentry and Joinery at two Colleges in Somerset. I’ve also renovated a number of my own houses.
THS’s other key person is Gordon’s partner Julie (Jools). Julie says:
“My role in THS is the admin side – books, records, e-mail, letters, and marketing our services. When Gordon had the idea of setting up the business, he didn’t want to be working all day, then spend all his spare time doing admin. So I said – “No problem – after 35 years in the Civil Service, a bit of paperwork isn’t going to faze me!” So our skills and experience complement one another very well.
